Mumbai,
March 3, 2005
Advertising Agencies Association of India
(AAAI), an association comprising all the
major advertising agencies -- which account
for about 80% of the advertising revenues
emanating in India -- is completing 60 years
of professional involvement in the country.
To celebrate this landmark event, AAAI has
drawn up a 10-point programme to further
become relevant to its various constituents
– its members, advertisers, media
and the society at large. Speaking on the
subject, Mr Srinivasan K Swamy, President,
AAAI said, “Our Association has served
well the cause of advertising and its development
in the last 60 years and it is time to review
and strengthen the role played by the Association,
given the current market dynamics. We are
concerned with some of the developments
and we are keen to take some corrective
action – and what better time than
the diamond jubilee to do this? “A
Conclave of Agency Heads is planned later
this year when the problems faced by the
industry would be addressed to find an appropriate
solution, he said. The Diamond Jubilee year,
he said, will be used to address critical
industry issues with a fresh perspective.
Mr Ramesh Narayan, Past President of AAAI,
as Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Committee, has been entrusted with the task
of coordinating the celebrations in a fitting
manner. |

New Corporate Identity
AAAI has decided to give itself
a totally new identity to be relevant to the
current times. The Association will now sport
a simple, yet modern logo and a logotype that
reflects the abbreviation of its name. The
three ‘A’s are the support on
which the ‘drum’ base depends.
The ‘I’ has been turned into the
proverbial stick to signal professional empowerment.
Together this change of identity and design
is evocative of the AAAI’s role in modulating
the industry’s cadence, creating a resonant
reverb across its membership. Ms Elsie Nanji,
Vice Chairman and Chief Creative Officer,
Ambience Publicis, was entrusted with the
task, which has been successfully completed
based on a brief that the graphics should
be contemporary, vibrant and should depict
a strong Association. |

Book
on the History of Advertising
India has matured as an Advertising
Market over the years. Yet we do not have
a book which traces the initial days of advertising,
its progress over the decades and the role
played by it at various times. AAAI is intending
to bridge this information gap by producing
a well-researched book during this Diamond
Jubilee Year. |
 |
AAAI
Publications on Business Practices
Mr Kurien Mathews has been entrusted
with the task of bringing out a series of
publications including an AAAI Official Handbook
for Advertising Agencies and Advertisers.
It will cover areas like best practices responsibilities
and ethics. Besides
the AAAI plans to bring out papers from
eminent industry professionals and put them
on our website. Printed copies would also
be available to members and various well-defined
target audiences like advertising specialists,
government and students. |
 |
Diamond
Jubilee Seminars
After the popularity of The Block workshops
which ended last July, the AAAI now has plans
for some more workshops and seminars on Media,
Research, Outdoor and Creative. Mr
Neville Gomes has already chalked out the
detail plans for one senior level full-day
programme on strategy management which will
be announced soon. |
 |
International
Advertising Convention
We plan to have a two-day convention on advertising
in Mumbai in July, 2005. Sir Martin Sorrel
Chairman of WPP Group has consented to participate
as a keynote speaker. Mr Andrew Robertson,
CEO, BBDO Worldwide also has consented to
participate. Several other business leaders
drawn from Marketing and Advertising world
would address this convention. |
 |
Afro-Asian
Awards
AAAI annual awards were substantially
changed last year with new categories and
lowered entry fees to encourage wider participation.
With the financial and editorial support received
from The Times of India Group and Star TV,
there was a completely new focus and direction.
In July-August this year we would continue
with this effort initiated last year. This
apart, in February-March 2006, AAAI is planning
to launch a more comprehensive and international
Afro-Asian Creative Awards show. Mr Madhukar
Kamath has agreed to lead this with the assistance
and support of all the major creative heads
in India. India truly would establish is rightful
place in the world over time by establishing
this as a major awards event every year, which
creative people would look forward to. |
 |
Advertising
Centre
AAAI would actively be involved in
the setting up of the Advertising Centre where
all organizations involved in advertising
– Advertising Council of India, Advertising
Standards Council of India, Audit Bureau of
Circulations, Indian Society of Advertisers
– would locate themselves in one building
so that all the organizations can benefit
from use of common resources. |
 |
Closer
involvement with Media and Advertisers
This Diamond Jubilee year provides
a new opportunity to further strengthen the
traditional ties with industry bodies like
the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), The Indian
Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) and the Indian
Society of Advertisers. Joint Working Committee
now work together to monitor bilateral interests
and concerns at very regular intervals with
both INS and IBF. |
 |
Evolving
a new code for Business Practices
The Executive Committee has set up
a Business Practices Committee, which has
been mandated to develop a code of Business
Practices, which would be followed by all
the members of AAAI. The recommendations would
also become the basis for a review of the
AAAI Constitution. Mr Anil Kapoor, Past President
of AAAI, is spear heading this Committee. |
 |
Social
relevant Campaigns
Our members have always been involved
in providing pro bono time and creative work
for socially important issues. In the recent
past we have done work for the Latur and Gujarat
Earthquake relief and most recently we have
done some work for raising funds for the Tsunami
victims. We are open to provide time for all
socially relevant causes particularly so during
this landmark year of our association. |
